Dry January in Hanoi no longer means an empty glass. If you embark on Dry January, 100-days-no-beer, or just not drinking booze for whatever reason (and you don’t even need a reason), then The Bottle Shop has you covered.
We stock a solid range of craft sodas from both Fizz Sodas and Sông Cái. Crack open a bottle of Lemongrass Lemonade, chill in our beer garden with a Passion Orange, or explore Sông Cái’s signature sodas and tonics – Guava Soda (what a nose on that!), Rice Paddy Tonic, or Shiso Tonic.
How about an AF beer? There’s still a reluctance, or lack of belief, amongst craft breweries in Vietnam about engaging the AF movement but recently we have seen some of the big guns, notably Heart of Darkness and East West, produce small batches of excellent AF brews (on tap only and usually taproom exclusives). Sadly, for now, most of the AF beer options available in Vietnam taste little more than the sweet malty mash they once were.
Hoprizon led the Charge of the AF Brigade back in 2020 with their excellent “New Wave” AF Lemongrass Lager, sadly discontinued. However, Bross have taken up the mantle with their IPA Zero, a solid craft beer on all accounts, just without the ABVs. From the AF lagers available we select Sagota AF Lager as the very best of the bunch. Not a beer, but if you fancy an AF Ginger Beer (didn’t they all use to be AF?) then VGreen have produced a tasty little number which shouldn’t go under the radar for those looking for an alternative to booziful options.
Meanwhile, the popularity of Kombucha and Cacaocha have waxed and waned over time, but they have entered Vietnam’s craft scene to a rousing welcome. You’re looking at approximately 0.5% ABV but that still classifies it as an AF beverage, especially considering you can achieve comparable levels in some orange juice and bread! But… what are they anyway?
Well Kombucha is a fermented, lightly effervescent, sweetened black tea drink It’s essentially a cocktail of SCOBY (symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast), sugar and black tea, more attractively named as Kombucha. Meanwhile, Cacaocha is a fermented cocoa tea made from cocoa nibs, cocoa silk shells, water, and SCOBY probiotics.
There are always plenty of No/Low Alcohol options at The Bottle Shop!
